A Mixing of Profit and Delight: The Story of James Lodge and the Boylston Manor, Thornhill

A Mixing of Profit and Delight: The Story of James Lodge and the Boylston Manor, Thornhill, tells the  story of Thornhill, near Boylston N.S., which began as grand manor house built by Loyalist entrepreneur James Lodge.  He had big dreams of multiple businesses in the pioneer days of eastern N.S. However, his plans turned to folly, and he presented his land to a local Black man, Anthony Bartram before leaving for England.  Bartram’s family married descendants of the former enslaved Andrew Izzard.  This book recounts the lives of Lodge, Bartram, and Izzard, their stories of survival and dreams for a better future in harsh Northeastern Canada.
